My mother-in-law was renovating and building extensions to her home charging all her building materials to an account my husband and his brother had opened at the local hardware shop when they were building a deck out front of their parents’ home. When the deck was finally finished, the two went to pay off the bills and were shocked at the exorbitantly expensive cost they were expected to pay off. Going through the invoices and signatures they realised their mother and her builders had been charging everything to their account without their permission. The hardware shope employees had assumed that as she was their mother this was some sort of family arrangement and had gone along with the mother's booking of hardware materials. My Dad was 92 and working hard to hide his growing dementia from us. My mom had died the year before so at his insistence, he lived alone. However, we talked him into having a helper come in twice a week to do laundry, wash dishes, etc. One day the helper came and couldn’t get in the house and couldn’t get my Dad to answer the phone or the door. He had fallen in the tub 30 hours before and couldn’t get out.

 My brother was able to let the rescue squad into the house. Dad had a severe urinary tract infection that caused him to fall getting in the shower and since he had been stuck in a hard surfaced tub for a day and a half he also had rhabdomyolysis (damaged muscle fibers that release proteins into the blood). He had to be on IV fluids for 3 days to flush out the proteins and antibiotics for the UTI. We noticed that in the evenings he would call us and say some crazy things but the nurses and doctors told us that wasn’t that unusual for an elderly person with a UTI in an unfamiliar place. One night he called my brother and said he was in a hotel near the airport in Norfolk, VA and couldn’t find his wallet. ?? After his stay in the hospital he went to rehab so he could regain his mobility again.
